Senior team manager Damian Locke today named two more key players re-joining the Wexford FC squad for 2018.

Wexford local Conor Sutton and Kilkenny native Owen McCormack were both confirmed as having agreed to sign up, having played important roles in the Wexford FC side in the 2017 season.  Sutton and McCormack represent major young prospects for Wexford, at just 20 years and 19 years of age respectively.

Conor Sutton has had a versatile role in Locke’s starting eleven thus far, playing at full back and midfield during his 15 appearances for Wexford FC.  McCormack meanwhile has been a stalwart at centre back alongside the new captain Ross Kenny, making 27 starts in the new-look Wexford FC defence in 2017.

Both players have been at Ferrycarrig Park for a number of seasons, having come through the development system of Wexford Youths.  Speaking to the media team this week, Conor Sutton recounted his time with the Youths:

“I started playing for Wexford [Youths] in 2012, I was with Curracloe before that and been at Ferrycarrig ever since.  I joined as a 15 year-old and then was playing with the U-18s and U-19s.  In my last year with the U-19s I got some game time with the seniors, and now here I am.”

“My time with senior squad in 2017 definitely improved me as a player, the standard was a big step up and physically even a bigger step up.  It really improved me greatly over the last year”

Sutton was eager too to develop further with Wexford FC for the year to come:

“I’m really looking forward to pre-season in 2018, and I actually really enjoyed it last year as well.  The buzz around the squad is really good and I really enjoyed working with Damian Locke and Carl Grehan last year, I’m sure it will be even better in 2018.”

“The extra playoff places are 100 percent a big incentive for us next year.  If we went on a good run of form, we could definitely push up the table and you don’t know what might happen in the end.”

Finally, Sutton had a message of gratitude to the Wexford FC fans for their support during a difficult year in 2017 and wanted to welcome the introduction of the Wexford Supporters Trust:

“I want to say thanks a million to the fans for coming into the Supporters Trust.  Next season will be a big adventure.  Thanks for supporting us and we will try to pay it back on the pitch next year”.

The fixture list for the 2018 season is due to be announced 19th December 2017.
