Wexford FC have a distraction from league action this Friday evening as they entertain Crumlin United in the First Round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.

Speaking ahead of the game, manager Damian Locke the game will be a big challenge for his team. “They will play as if they have nothing to lose, with all of the expectation on us to win. I’ve said it many times that teams that are continuously competing for LSL and MSL titles are more than good enough to compete with First Division teams.”

Referring to the build up to the game, Locke went on to say, “We’ve approached training like every other week. They [Crumlin] will get all the respect they deserve on Friday night”

Defender AJ Lehane who played the full 90 minutes in Athlone, will be looking to keep his starting spot for the game, and with it, make his first appearance in this stage of the FAI Cup. “I’m really looking forward to the game. When I joined the club, it was because I wanted to test myself, and like every other player out there, I want to progress to the next round. People may look at the fixture and think that we’re a League of Ireland team, and that we should win easily. But this is absolutely not the case. Crumlin will come to Ferrycarrig confident, and looking to get one over on us. They’ll definitely give us as tough a game as we have faced at any stage this season”.

Wexford will welcome back Captain Craig McCabe after not featuring in the last 4 games, but will be without Shane Dunne who is now on duty for the Student World Games.

The statistics:

  • Wexford FC's previous cup game this season, at home to Waterford FC in the EA Sports Cup, ended in a 5-0 defeat.
  • Thomas Croke is currently the club's top goal scorer with 4 league goals.
  • Ross Kenny is the club's top appearance maker, having started 22 of 23 games this season (missed Cobh away in June due to suspension)
  • Having made his first start for the club last weekend, goalkeeper Danny Bolger will make his home debut.
