Wexford FC will head to the Midlands on Friday night, knowing that a win will lift them off of the foot of the table, and 2 points clear of second from bottom Athlone Town.

It will be by no means easy for the slaney-siders as they continue to struggle with a number of injuries and suspensions. One player who is especially looking forward to the trip is ex Shamrock Rovers and Athlone Town defender Conor Dunne. "I'm really looking forward to the game on Friday, as are the rest of the lads. We've worked hard in training all week, and we know what we need to do to get maximum points from the game. It's an absolutely massive game for us, and we'll be going in to it full of confidence and wanting to get all 3 points. At this stage of the season, we want to finish as high up the table as we can, and the way the two teams are positioned at the moment, it's going to be an indicator of who will finish bottom. Obviously this adds some pressure to the team, but it will be good pressure and the lads will take it on the chin and use it to motivate themselves."

After seeing red last time out against Cobh Ramblers, both Mark Slater and Shane Dunne will have to watch from the sidelines as they each serve a suspension. Adam Hanlon and Aaron O'Connor continue to miss out through injury. There will be a number of late fitness tests, as captain Craig McCabe, Adam O'Rourke, Conor Sutton, and Andrew O'Connor will be assessed, but may only be fit enough for a spot on the bench.

The one bit of good news for Wexford is the return of Sean Hurley from a knee injury.

After the departure of goalkeeper Corey Chambers to the US, new signing Danny Bolger is expected to make his first start for the club between the sticks.

Athlone Town have picked up just one point in their last five outings. That was a 1-1 draw at home to Cabinteely on July 14th.

The statistics:

  • Wexford FC's last away match provided a maximum haul of points against Shelbourne (2-1 win, Jul 14th)
  • Thomas Croke is currently the club's top goal scorer with 4 league goals.
  • Ross Kenny is the club's top appearance maker, having started 21 of 22 games this season (missed Cobh away in June due to suspension)
  • Danny Bolger is expected to start on Friday night in goal. Wexford FC have named 5 different goalkeepers in their match day squads this season.
  • Wexford FC have conceded 2 goals in 3 of their last 4 games (2 at home, 1 away)

Athlone Town: 8/5
Draw: 12/5
Wexford FC: 6/4
